Playing in the Park

I was driving down the road through a small town the other day

When with my window down I heard some kids outside at play

I couldn’t help but stop and watch them having fun there in the park

Running, climbing and going down the slide, to them, oh what a lark

Kids don’t know strangers and all the kids quickly become play friends

They don’t judge on color, financial status they all just want to blend in

There is nothing in the world like watching the little ones when they first learn to climb

Or seeing their smile and laughter after going down the slide the first time

Yes we all need to take the time to go to a park and just watch the kids play and run

And it will bring back the memories of your youth of you playing in the sun

Watching the Clouds

I did something the other day I’ve not done since I was just a kid

Laid in the grass and watched the clouds slowly move is what I really did

I laid under the majestic oaks and listened to musical Tower play

Nothing could be quite so relaxing as this was to me that day

Yes as I get older and live out my later years of life

I find the simple things are what touches my heart and relieves my daily strife

I no longer need parties and   bars at night to get a thrill

I now get my thrills relaxing and in the grass lying there on the hill

Yes I’ve learned I really don’t need a lot of excitement in my life anymore

True pleasure for me is spending time with family, yes that is what I really adore

A New Morning

I was leaving on a trip early just the other day

I was sitting at the traffic light there along the way

I was looking into the darkness of the western morning sky

When I glanced into the rear view and to my surprise

The morning sky behind me was shining bright from the morning sun

Showing me and the world another day had now just begun

This got my mind churning about how life can change so fast

And how problems in our life come and go but always seem to pass

Life is like the day and night how it comes and goes again

Problems arise from time to time and put things in a spin

Bad things are like the darkness of the night that happen in our life

But morning will always come again and bring happiness like the new day light

So when you have issues that seem to really beat you down

Just remember that they too shall pass and bright new morning sun soon will be coming around

The Dense Fog

As I sit here looking at the field covered with dense heavy fog

And in the distance I hear the faint sound of maybe a small barking dog

I can’t help but to think of how fog is a lot like everyday life

Where sometimes we try to find our way but can’t seem to see the light

The clutter and the fog that we plow through in life everyday

Make it hard sometimes to find the right path as we’re on our way

So sometimes it is best to just slow down and maybe have a cold beer

And sit back and wait for the dense heavy fog to lift and to clear

A New Year

Christmas now is over and a new year is on the way

Some days of this past year were great and others not so good I say

But one thing is for certain and that’s next year will be exciting and new

It will throw in some days of happiness and joy and maybe even sad days a few

But we should face each day with vigure and face all challenges head on

And when things don’t seem to be going our way remain vigilant and strong

Yes each year brings new challenges that each of us will face

But we will get through them all with perseverance and God’s Love and his Grace

There for Us All

It’s Christmas morning with tree lights all aglow

Precious little ones will be waking up excited, as we all know

Rooms full of laughter and screams of joy will soon be the sound

As presents are opened and wrapping is all thrown around

Soon we will all gather for a Christmas day feast

With holiday favorites of pumpkin pie, veggies and meat

But during our rush to have loads and loads of fun

We need to slow down and give thanks to our God up above

For the real reason isn’t about presents and good old Santa Clause

It’s about the birth of baby Jesus who is there for us all

Life Story

We all need to take the time to sit down and write a long heartfelt story

Not one of fiction about some imaginary hero living in all their glory

No, I’m talking about writing a true story, one about your own life

Starting at the beginning and following it right up until tonight

I bet you will find memories of fun times and times that will bring you to tears

Memories you have long forgotten and have been lost from you for years

There is something about sitting down and writing and what begins to flow into your mind

Once you get started and when you put it down you will suddenly wonder what happened to the time

Someone very dear did this for their grandchildren for Christmas this very year

And I don’t know about you but I bet they will cherish this hand written story and to them will always be dear

What is Success

Have you ever given thought to what is true success

Is it how much money you make or in your endeavors are you the best

Are you the best at your daily  craft or at your favorite sport

Or maybe success to you was announced on the boss’s annual report

To me success has been determined not by anything such as these

Not by money in the bank or by or anything else you can actually see

No true success to me came as a surprise in a simple father and daughter talk

While we were outside taking a casual summer walk

You see I was told by my grown daughter something that made my life a true success

And I knew then I was successful and her Mom and I had done our best

She gave me the greatest compliment that I would like to share

And that was when she said “Thank you Daddy for ya’ll always being there”

Well to me success in life comes in different ways

But the greatest determination comes from what your children have to say

TV Dinners

Some things from our past have now up and flown away

Things like eating supper at the kitchen table with family every day

When we were growing up our Mom had one hard fast unwavering rule

And that was at supper time we all sat down together which to me was very cool

Sunday dinner’s lavish spread
was on the table each week at high noon

With ham from a can covered with pineapples and banana pudding we devoured with a spoon

Then one day someone invented something that changed our life and that of our kin

That was a frozen TV dinner, and it was all there in a plate of tin

Yes this TV dinner was the beginning of the end for life as we all knew

Our favorite meal was now cooked in it’s own tin plate which was easier than making chicken or beef stew

Then instead of eating supper at the table together as a family every night

People started eating a TV dinners
watching Bonanza or something else on TV they liked

Yes it didn’t take too long for Sunday dinner and family supper to permanently fade away

Now people were eating while watching TV and to each other had nothing much to say

So now with a new Congress and I’m sure they’re seeking something  useful to do

I say they pass a law that says we must eat supper at the table with family or someone else you choose

Open Up My Heart

I was at the store today shopping for outside Christmas lights

When a lady checking out in front of the line I could tell her money was a little tight

She had her cart with a few toys and cheer she needed for Christmas day

With a toddler there by the hand and a baby on the way

She was trying to pay part by cash and the rest on a debit card

But when the cashier said declined I could tell it was heart breaking and hard

The people in front of me in line were making comments to move out of the way

But she just looked at the crowd shaking her head not knowing what to say

She left the cart and with toddler in hand walked slowly out the door

And for me that image has been in my mind ever since I left the store

For I have before been in her place and know how she must have felt

And I’m so ashamed I didn’t step up, because for her I could have helped

Most of us throughout our life go through times that maybe are financially hard

So I promise the next time I’m in line and happens I will open up my wallet and heart

Inventions

We all have our times when we reflect on issues of importance in our life

That’s what happened to me this morning drinking my coffee and enjoying the first morning light

I started thinking of the two most important inventions to me that we all enjoy

It’s not the computer, wheel or even that favorite toy

No these two inventions are much more important than that you see

And I challenge anyone in the civilized world to disagree with me

You see to me one of the inventions that I refer too is the indoor toilet that flushes after each use

And the other is it’s partner in business the toilet paper no matter the brand that we choose

If you think I’m wrong just have your toilet be out of order when the need is there

Or notice there is no toilet paper in the bathroom as look around in despair

Two Things

There are two things in life that we all need to have before we come to  pass

These are not of monetary value or family heirlooms that we hope will last

These are things that we carry in our mind and heart each and every day

They affect the way we look at and live our life as we go along our way

One is that before we die we need to experience a true and unforgettable love

One that the passion was so intense and brighter than the sun above

The other is to have heard the story of the life from someone you truly admire

One that you remember and think of at the times when you find you’re frustrated and tired

These two things are the greatest gift we can ever hope to obtain

For after the experience of a true love, your life, it is never the same

And that story you were told will cheer you up no matter how many times through your mind you hear

For it will bring you back to the day it was told to you from someone that was so dear

Election Polls

The polls are all in some show Kamala to win

While others lean to Trump and say he’ll win it again

Polls they are swayed to show just what they want

But the real one people cast on election day will have some happy and others distaunt

Yes the elections are important and we are so fortunate to have them you see

For most in the world they don’t have this precious privilege like you and like me

The winning party will set policies for our country that we will live by

Until the next election and if we are not happy to them we say bye

So everyone exercise your right and just get out and go vote

And if your favorite candidate wins Wednesday you can run around and glote

Shoes Tell it All

Sitting here on the town square park bench patiently waiting on my wife

I couldn’t help but notice the people around me as they all walked by

Some were walking at a fast steady pace as if in a hurry and they knew where to go

While others just slowly shuffled along with no interest they had to show

But the one thing I’ve learned is you can tell a lot about someones mood by seeing them walk in their shoes

You can tell if their feet hurt them, if they want to go home or if they feel well as their shoes will give you a clue

The poor lady in the cowboy hat cringes as she takes every step, but those new boots, they make her really look good

And the old man with a cane is wearing his new bright white sneakers because his wife said that he should

The joggers walk briskly in high dollar shoes you know they wear them well

The young girl with her boyfriend she’s wearing shoes with high heels that hurt, but don’t they really look swell

Now me, I preferred to choose shoes for comfort when I walked around that little town

And I really don’t care what others may think even if my wife says I look like a clown

Yes some will get blisters and corns on their feet just because they want to look good

But me and my trusty smelly dirty old Brooks can happily walk around just like I should

Toys and Candy Gone By

I stopped at an old general store today when traveling a two lane country road

As I walked around the narrow cluttered aisles memories of my childhood began to grow

There on the shelves in open crates were toys and candy that were left in time

Memories that we all cherished back in our childhood made my old eyes shine

There was a bin of marbles for you to pick through and choose your favorite ones

And there on another shelf was a paddle ball that we used to play with for hours for fun

Jaw breakers and wax bottles filled with flavored syrup we would suck out for a sugar rush

And there in the ice filled barrel on the table were RC Cola and an Orange Crush

Today kids will never experience the joy these simple things brought to kids back in our day

The fun we had shooting marbles or hitting the ball with that paddle is how we used to play

I remember riding my bike with a sock of marbles hanging on my blue jean belt

And playing marbles on the school playground with friends, Oh the joy we felt

Today those dangerous marbles and jaw breakers, kids are not allowed to touch

Afraid that they will choke on the jaw breakers and marbles, and sugar they can’t have that much

Mothers of our time didn’t worry about kids running wild on sugar or choking on candy or a toy you see

They would just say, when you choke on that or break your neck running wild, DON’T COME CRYING TO ME

Entertainer on the Road

I’m sitting here in the hotel lobby staring out into the open air

Looking at the entertainer tour buses loading up the band out there

We all seem to think the life of being on the stage playing music every night

Is such a life of luxury and fun being there under the bright stage lights

But the reality is these people that choose that as their life career

Are on the road traveling from show to show with their family no where near

They load up the bus and head out of town to play show after show

And after the show is over and lights go out it’s on the road again they go

They sleep in a bunk traveling at highway speed and will put on another great show tomorrow night

And they live this grueling lifestyle just for the entertainment of you and I

So the next time you buy a ticket to see the act or show that you really like

Remember they are missing their family affairs that are happening at their own house tonight

People are the Same

As I sit here in this restaurant tonight enjoying my evening feast

I look around at the other tables, there are couples, families and even Catholic Priest

The one thing that always seems to be the same is the way people interact

You can always tell the status of the relationship by watching and that’s a fact

The young couple on their first date are nervous and trying to impress

While there are others that are listening to their companion but really could care less

Then the business meal is going on at the table next to me

And the boss is sharing his brilliant thoughts while the others eat their meals hastily

Then there is the couple that has been together for many years, this you can’t disguise

She is telling him and the waitress what the Doctor said he could have and he just rolls his eyes

Yes people are the same everywhere and are very easy to read

That’s why watching people in public is so amusing to me

Why They Come South

As I travel around this great country that we all call our home

There is something that stands out and shows what seems to be going on

It’s the masses of people from the north moving to the south

It may be the State of Florida, Georgia,Texas or the Carolinas to buy their new house

When traveling throughout the north east, construction sites they are rare

But when you cross the Mason Dixon, all of a sudden construction it’s everywhere

New homes are being built at such a rapid pace just to fill the need

And rental trucks and moving vans heading south on the interstate at constant breakneck speed

Now I’m just an old small town southern country boy that have mixed feelings about all the growth

But when you live in the greatest place on earth it’s a dream place to live for most

They say they are running from the harsh weather or maybe fast pace of life up north

But I think the real reason is they heard about my Grandma’s smothered fried Chicken, Collard Greens, Corn Bread and Sweet Tea, of course

I’ve Been There

When October rolls around I tear up and thank God for giving me another year

It’s been 21 years of living with the reality of knowing in 2003 my destiny with death was so very near

That is the time when Stage 4  Cancer came knocking on my door

And I had to face the terror of not seeing my wife and daughter again if I didn’t win that war

I fought the battle with Chemo, Radiation and all the surgeries I could bare

I refused to give up and lose the war for my family I had to be there

The goal at the time was just to buy me five more years or maybe ten

And research would become more advanced and treatments would be even better then

Well research has advanced by leaps and bounds but I’ve needed none

For that fight against that terrible foe is one that I seem to have won

So if you are fighting now against this dreadful enemy and it’s getting to hard to bare

Just remember to fight with all your might and that you like me in 21 years can look back and say I’ve been there

Low Point in Life

I heard a question asked by an interviewer of someone on TV the other day

And this question keeps coming back in my mind and just doesn’t seem to go away

His comment was we all have highs and great times in our life

But what was your lowest point where you weren’t sure that you would survive

I just kept thinking of this question as it is part of everyone’s past

We all have that one point or event in our life we are glad it didn’t last

I started thinking of things that are devastating to most I would assume

Things that are hardest to overcome and sometimes take a lifetime to somehow work it’s way through

Then the answer came to me and I know we have all experienced this tragic time

The thing that is always there throughout your years hidden in your mind

This is time when your heart was broken and ripped right from your chest

May have been from someone you loved or maybe a friend you thought was your best

Yes we all have this time we carry with us that stabs our heart  just like a jagged knife

And that my friends we all do share, a low point in our life
