As The Storm Comes Near

As I like so many others sit waiting on the storm

Knowing what lies ahead will leave some lives and homes tragically hit and torn

Some people will lose their home, and treasures of their past

But as hard as it may seem the memories of that home, they will always last

Yes some of us must leave our homes and possessions we now own

And some will return again to what used to be their home

The most important thing today to remember as we all prepare

Is to say a prayer for our family and neighbors and show that we really care

So as I leave my words to you I pray all will be as safe and OK

And may God protect us all through this is all I can say

Opinions of Others

While watching our grand daughters play today running without a care

They did whatever came to mind not caring if others stopped and stared

Young children live life so free with no worry what others say or think

They just want to have fun willing to accept others at once without even a blink

Then something happens and our lives all of a sudden they do drastically change

Our priorities and self respect it starts to drastically get rearranged

We look in the mirror and wonder what our friends may think of how we did our hair

Will they like the outfit that we chose or will they just stop and glare

Or to even total strangers on the street, OH DEAR what will they say

Life to some becomes obsessed with opinions of others to the point it controls their day

This is terrible that emotions and opinions of others control whether you’re happy or you’re sad

If you just let go and forget what others think you may find those jeans or your hair style really ain’t that bad

My Family

I think I have a problem because I overthink to many simple things

Just like this morning I was talking to my sister and it was like my brain suddenly it grew a pair of wings

You see my mind started flying and I tried to make sense of it all

And I came to the realization how much I love my family and yes, I mean them all

You see some people don’t feel family is an important part of their life

But to me it means everything, my siblings, the kids and of course my wife

I really don’t have any fear of losing all the possessions I have in the world

As long as I have my family beside me I could fight my way back in a whirl

Yes I’ve had my good times and even been beat down at times in my life

But I was always able to bounce right back with the support of family by my side

Story to Tell

As I was sitting enjoying a relaxing non eventful day

I heard someone speaking of the tragedy in their life they could not shed away

This got me to thinking about everyone we see on the street or maybe at traffic light

What is happening in their life maybe good or demons they are fighting to hide

We all have a story within us with chapters that change each and every day

Some chapters they are happy while others we wish would just go away

I’ve had some good ones in my story while others hard to bare

Where maybe we lost a love one or health it just wasn’t there

So as you pass by someone maybe a stranger or even a person you know well

Remember to not to pass judgement so quickly as they too are creating their own story to tell

Old Worn Hat

I overheard a conversation while eating lunch just the other day

When a stranger stopped and spoke the gentleman at the table across the way

He asked the elderly man about his hat that laid there next to his glass of tea

He said I can’t believe you’re still wearing that old thing, heck it’s older than me

The elderly man just smiled and said but it fits just right and is comfortable just like a lifelong friend

You know the one you’ve known all your life and run into now and then

The stranger smiled and said I know what you mean, as he slowly walked away

That quick I  remembered I saw my childhood friend just the other day

And like that comfortable old worn hat the conversation it fit just right

We talked and laughed at times gone by and then again we said good bye

Elections or My Friends

To my friends I don’t need to know or care on election day who you like or who you vote for

But I will still welcome you anytime that you come knocking on my door

Some of us vote for a Democrat and some Republican is the way it always works

Sometimes the candidate you support wins and other times you get your feelings hurt

But in today’s troubling times people seem to base friendship on how you choose to vote

This is because with social media opinions are expressed and others they all take note

The old saying used to be, never discuss politics or religion with family or others that you like

As it for sure like nothing else in life will surely cause turmoil and start a fight

Now I have my beliefs and I’m sure you have yours, so treasure your’s and I’ll do mine tonight as we all go to bed

And let others ruin their friendships with the hurtful things that in elections all without thinking always seem to get said

Election Promises

The political races now are all now running out there at full speed

The opponents are busy telling us they will fix everything, that we want and need

The prices at the gas pump are going to be so cheap at the station for us all

And the interest we pay for our house and car, their promise is they will surely fall

The wars all around the world, Oh they will suddenly all go away

Along with the starvation of children, rising temperatures, storms, fires also, so they say

All of this will happen they all promise, if we just give them a chance

And after they win on election day we will be so happy we will go outside and dance

Now I’m not real sure if I quite believe them, but that’s what they all say

But we will all find out pretty damn quick after election day

Our Independence Day

This special day arrives on July 4th each and every year

To all of us Americans, to our heart it should be so dear

You see this day isn’t just a day to be off work and cook out by the pool

It’s a celebration of our independence as a country from a strong tyrant’s rule

The lives that were lost and families that struggled back then, in unbearable pain

All felt it was worth it for our freedom, to them it must be gained

Now as we live here in America, FREE, in the greatest country on this earth

I’ll be forever thankful to my  ancestors who fought for what they knew our freedom was worth

So enjoy your day with family and friends at a BBQ or maybe on the lake

And for those that fought for our freedom, to them be sure to bow your head and give thanks

     GOD BLESS AMERICA

Drying Forks and Knives

After dinner I was rinsing dishes with my wife there by my side

When it brought back memories that were left like most others  of a different time

The memories of which I’m speaking have been lost by families somewhere along the way

Which like so many other family values no longer exist sad to say

They were the times when meals were at the supper table and grace was said first thing

Yes we were all together at the same time whether in the winter, summer maybe fall or even  spring

Once the meal was finished the dishes they all had to be done

And the dish washers were us kids each and every one

Made no difference to our Mom if you were a young girl or a older boy

The dish cloth and drying towel were for the next little while became your precious toy

We would laugh at each and Pop the other from behind with a wet rolled up towel

Then we would chase each other around the table letting out a boystous howl

Mom would come in the kitchen to the rescue and get us back on track

But as soon as she was out of the kitchen the shenanigans  would suddenly come back.

At the time I never thought I would miss that time in my growing life

But it sure makes me smile and chuckle now remembering the fun we had washing those plates, forks and knives

Crooked Politicians

There used to be a time long ago somewhere in our past

When elections were run on the issues and only true votes they were cast

Then the big money and the power took over and evil did set in

That’s when corruption and deceit in the elections, it tragically began

We see it in our national elections where opponents try to destroy their opposing foe

They will stop at nothing to ruin the lives of their rival and even their friends and family that they have in tow

Now that deceit and dishonesty has become acceptable in politics at every level it now seems

Even in local races where your elected so called friends now stoop to dishonest underhanded schemes

This is why we the people must do our research before we cast our important vote

To stop this shameful dishonesty and run these unethical crooked politicians down the river in a leaking boat

Memorial Day

This day that comes around and we have parties and BBQ each year

We are at the beach, lake or by the pool eating and drinking a cold beer

But do we really know what it means or do some even care

To most out there it’s only a day off work so I have something to share

I thought I would share what this day really is all about

It’s about why we all have the right to live a great life and our dreams we can carry out

You see Memorial Day is really not a very happy day

But a day to honor the fallen in a patriotic somber way

We all should take time to honor those who for our freedom gave their own life

Today we honor the soldiers that died storming a beach or maybe in a jungle or desert fight

Thousands of our fighting forces have given their life for us to live free

So they deserve this special day to be honored by you and me

Now Only Five

A young man and woman through love created a family next to none

Six kids with a bond that would always be strong and always live as one

The father left this world in haste and left our mother on her own

She took the task of raising us kids and providing a loving home

The bond that was between us six kids can never be explained

We were always there for each other to help when others were in pain

We have been so lucky to have not lost any of us along the way

Until that streak came to an end when lost our sister yesterday

Though the end was eminate and still hard, a blessing in the end

Now with our sister gone our life of five it now begins

Behind the Tombstone

I took the time today to ride through the old cemetery there in my home town

I have driven past it a thousand times and never even thought to  slow down

As I gazed throughout the plots and names, memories they surfaced of times gone by

They began to run through my mind and with some, even brought a tear to my eye

There with the majestic tombstone laid the person from whom I bought my very first car

And to his right a few rows down was a boy I grew up with and laid in the grass at night talking and gazing at stars

It’s funny how some had big elaborate tombstones as a testimony to their life

While others had a small piece of stone crudely etched as though with a carving knife

The thing that is certain is tombstones don’t make a difference on that day you die

The size of the tombstone either big or small, don’t define how you lived your life

When our maker calls us home on that final day

How you lived while on this earth will determine your eternal way

So when you pass the cemetery in your town and tombstones that are around

I’m sure past memories of your life surely will be found

Always remember the size of the tombstone that’s out there on display

Very well may not reflect the spot where a great soul lay

Years That Remain

As I sat in the waiting room at my doctors office just a few days ago

I was listening to conversations  while half watching on TV some medicine promo show

People were talking about their medicine and all their aches and pains

Then they complained about their life, the weather and all of last week’s rain

I couldn’t help but ponder about how people’s life it takes such tragic turn

How when we were young and innocent these issues were never a big concern

Ailments were not a problem and about the weather we didn’t care

Our biggest problem was the weekend party and who would all be there

Our life is always changing and moves along throughout the years

It brings times of happiness and joy and drags along some pain and tears

As like everyone in the room that day I too, have my aches and pains

But I’ll be damned if I’m going to sit around and complain and not enjoy my years that remain

From My World To Yours,

First Date

As I sat in a restaurant eating dinner with my wife the other night

I couldn’t help but overhear the conversation of the couple sitting at the table to our right

You could tell things were uncomfortable as they tried to be at ease

You could tell it was their first date as they both had shaking hands and shaking knees

Oh how I remember that scary night long ago there in my past

When I nervously picked up the girl of my dreams hoping to have a blast

We had the uncomfortable conversation that we thought the other would want to hear

Hoping I said the right things while not chasing her off running in fear

Well we made it through that first date night which ended up changing our life

Because even with that awkward first date that doll in the short skirt ended up becoming my wife

Yes there are few things in life that make you more nervous than when on that first date

But if things go right and you don’t screw up to bad, your date too, may end up just great

Just Plain Folks

As I sit clicking through the news channels this morning on TV

There is one thing that is the same on every show that I stop to see

The news isn’t what it used to be back in my younger days

Now it is nothing more than a staged exhibition of outlandish things they show and say

They no longer cover stories truthfully that affect lives of you and me

They show America all in turmoil in out of control cities like New York and DC

Well I see America the way it really is traveling the back roads of this land

And when you drive through real America you see how we really live and where most of us stand

I never see the protesting or rioting in the streets in small towns that I pass through

But I do see folks that wave when you pass or hold the door for you

What I see are parents with kids walking and playing and dropping them off at school

I see Mom and Pop drug stores, hardware stores and carpenters in their truck loaded with their tools

This is the America the news doesn’t cover  because it’s not what they want you to see

They want us all to live in fear and follow the agenda they push for their own need

Well I for one love my life out  traveling and visiting with folks I meet along the way

Just Plain folks living their dreams, raising a family and working hard out there every day

Good Times Begin

I truly enjoy visiting the small towns that lie on the back roads throughout the south

With the downtown streets and beautiful old homes that lie there throughout

The downtown streets in some are now all vacant and bare

But as I see them I try to invision a past time and what was in there

Was it Railroad town that shipped fruits and cattle to states far away

Or maybe a farm town growing peanuts, tobacco and hay

Now some towns they have faded and fallen into tragic despair

While others still boom and have small family businesses open everywhere

The next time you take a road trip don’t be in such hurry to get to the end

Get off the interstate and drive through the small towns that’s where a good time, it will begin

Destin Dunes

As I gaze at the beautiful Destin dunes with sea grass blowing in the brisk cool autumn breeze

It brings to mind just how fast things go by in life, to me anyway, it seems

Yesterday I was holding our new born child for the first time in my  arms

Then today she is grown with children of her own running in our front yard

It was only last week I think, when I took my bride to be

Now this week it’s been forty eight years that she has been putting up with me

Things in life change so fast it seems, faster than you can stop and think

Like the deserted Gulf Coast of Florida, that has all but disappeared in just a blink

I sure hope what I’m seeing today doesn’t go away over night like my child did so soon

I hope if I return next year or in ten, I will still be able to see the Destin dunes

Country Buffet

There isn’t anything like it in a small southern town that brings everyone together

We see elderly lady in pearls with a walker sitting with a biker dressed in leather

You see a doctor and lawyer sitting and laughing with a local farmer

And the preacher of the downtown Baptist church with police in body armor

Everyone seems so content if only for a short while

No cell phones ringing just conversation and a lot of hugs and smiles

The food is hot and piled up high as you amble past the delicious feast

Just gazing and trying to decide today what do I want to eat

That’s the atmosphere that is so hard find at most places today

Yes this is what I love about a small town country style buffet

Whistle Stop

If you are driving through middle Georgia and at noon you’re ready to eat
You need to swing by this little hole in the wall that’s really pretty neat

It sits at the end of this little forgotten lost in time one street town
Where you will see the 1892 Opry House and Court House and never have to move around

I have to tell you if it’s Creme Brule or escargot that you want for your lunch
Then this probably isn’t the place you want stop your car, maybe just a hunch

No this is the place for fried green tomatoes with meat loaf and hot cornbread
Or maybe just a light lunch of a fried green tomato grilled cheese with sweet iced tea instead

It became a national landmark with the help of movie fame
While the menu specialty gave this Hollywood classic it’s famous name

So the next time you’re hungry and are near little Juliette, GA
Stop and eat some fried green tomatoes at the  Whistle Stop Cafe
